Transition Towns

The Transition Towns Network mission is:

to inspire
to encourage
to network
to support and
to train

communities as they as they consider, adopt, adapt and implement the transition model in order to establish a Transition Initiative in their locality. The transition model emboldens communities to consider the linked challenges of peak oil and climate change and for people to find local answers to those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive. Typically, self-determined solutions will involve some relocalisation.

What's happening in Berkshire?

Transition Town MAIDENHEAD:

Transition Town Maidenhead aims to prepare the Maidenhead community for a sustainable future by involving all interested community groups, businesses and individuals. The outcome will be a plan which will equip Maidenhead to continue to thrive during and after the transition from abundant, cheap oil (Peak Oil), to scarce, expensive oil supplies. This plan will be known as the Maidenhead Energy Descent Plan.

A Steering Group has been formed with the aim of raising public awareness on the twin issues of Climate Change and Peak Oil in several ways: public meetings, film showings, smaller meetings with interested individuals, dedicated website, social networking websites and re-skilling.

Transition Town Maidenhead operates without funds currently thanks to the voluntary ad hoc donation of time and loan of facilities by a combination of individuals and local businesses. In August it learnt it had been successful in the first step for making a detailed bid for Big Lottery funding of £500,000 for its first project. More information is at www.transitionmaidenhead.org
