Located near Maidenhead, Waltham Place is a working organic estate of 170 acres, including a farm with several rare breed animals and poultry. There are extensive arable and grazing fields as well as vegetable gardens, orchards, ornamental and landscape gardens and a large lake surrounded by woods and parkland. Care for the environment and sustainability are prime objectives of the management strategies of the land and animals.
The farm's produce is processed on the estate and is on sale at the Farm Shop, open Tuesday to Friday 10am - 4 pm. It can also be found at Beaconsfield Farmers' Market and nearby Hare Hatch produce market (both fourth Saturday of the month).
Waltham Place gardens and Tea Room are open from May to the end of September, Tuesday - Friday from 10am to 4pm.
The estate is committed to its own education programme and is an excellent venue for educating school children and the general public about organic production and environmental issues.
Waltham Place's 40 acres of extensive landscape and ornamental gardens have undergone an exciting transformation. Dutch garden designer, Henk Gerritsen introduced naturalistic planting within the existing formal gardens, so that the boundaries of nature and gardens are explored.
The present structure of the hedges and walls - some of which date from the 17th century - remain as the backbone of the gardens whilst the introduction of large-scale naturalistic landscaping and planting, resistant to both drought and flood, are very appealing to wildlife with indigenous plants playing an important role.
On the Fridays of every month, at 11am and 2pm, the head gardener, Beatrice Krehl leads a tour around the gardens, pointing out the latest developments. Group visitors are welcome on Tuesday and Thursdays while Wednesday is open National Gardens Scheme Day.
