20 July 2008 Lowbrook School attends Maidenhead Farmers' Market Lowbrook School brought their own home grown and home made produce to sell at last Sunday's Farmers' Market in Maidenhead. The children had heard from market organiser Kath Pinto, when she visited the school, all about what makes a Farmers' Market different from other food markets. They learnt that all the stallholders at the market were selling food they had produced themselves. Not only did the children grow their own herbs to sell but they used their own home grown soft fruit to make jam. Throughout the morning a rota of children from the school helped to sell the produce. Special visitor Theresa May, MP presented the school helpers with £25 of Farmers' Market gift vouchers. "I am particularly pleased that local schools have been involved in the Month of Taste", she said. "It is important that children learn about where their food comes from and this helps them to do just that".
The national Month of Taste celebrates the best in local and seasonal food. It is part of a campaign by the National Farmers' Retail and Markets Association (FARMA), a UK co-operative of producers and growers. The festival aims to highlight the abundance of UK seasonal produce available at this time of year, with each week focusing on different foods such as asparagus and berries, soft fruit, salad leaves, green beans, peas and herbs. Customers have attended events across the country such as tastings, farm tours, workshops, demonstrations, picnics and barbecues. Recipe cards and product information are also be available. Lowbrook school plans to use the proceeds from their stall to buy books which the children will choose themselves.
7 April 2008 Friends of the Earth wants aviation included in targets On Saturday, 5 April Maidenhead and District Friends of the Earth staged a photo call in Maidenhead High Street. They were urging prime Minister Gordon Brown to stop ignoring aviation. The group wants the Government's new Climate Change Law to cover all sources of carbon dioxide emissions, including the UK's share of emissions from international aviation and shipping. ![]() not to ignore aviation in its Climate Change Bill Maidenhead's MP, Theresa May, will have the opportunity to vote on the law when it is debated in Parliament later this month. Maidenhead and District Friends of the Earth were taking action as part of a national day of action in support of The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth's campaign for a strong Climate Change law. The group has already submitted its views to the government in response to the Public Consultation on the proposed law last summer. The Government's proposed law does not count the UK's share of emissions from international aviation and shipping. Friends of the Earth believes that it is ludicrous to pretend these emissions don't exist, and unfair to treat aviation and shipping any differently to other sectors of the economy. Aviation is a fast growing source of carbon dioxide emissions. Government figures published in January 2008 showed aviation accounts for 6.4% of UK carbon emissions. The impact of aviation emissions is double that of carbon dioxide alone because of other gases that planes pump out at altitude. Kath Pinto, Friends of the Earth supporter and local resident said: "It's crazy for Gordon Brown to leave out climate changing emissions from planes and ships from the new Climate Change Law but that's what he is doing. Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry? We hope our MP, Theresa May, will use her vote to call for a strong Climate Change law that covers all emissions".
